The StressEraser uses biofeedback from your finger pulse. Your pulse rate is constantly rising and falling. The StressEraser calculates the time between each pulse and graphs these tiny time variations as a wave. This measurement is known as a type of heart rate "variability," or HRV. HRV is an accurate window into the activity of your nervous system.
Your wave shows how the time between your pulses increases and decreases from moment to moment. This is the natural cycle of your nervous system. For example, as your sympathetic (stress) activity increases, your pulse rate increases and your wave rises. As your parasympathetic (relaxation) activity increases, your pulse rate decreases and your wave falls.
As you'll see, these changes in pulse rate are directly influenced by your breathing. In general, as you inhale your pulse rate rises; as you exhale, it falls.
